Balos Lake / Lagoudi / Ligera

Balos Lagoon – The Exotic Landmark of Western Crete

The Balos Lagoon, also known as Lagoudi or Ligera, is located approximately 17 kilometres northwest of Kissamos and is one of the most iconic and breathtaking landscapes in all of Crete.

Its natural scenery feels almost unreal, with turquoise and emerald waters surrounding white sand with soft pink shades, creating a truly unique blend of sea and lagoon.

Balos lies within a protected area of exceptional natural beauty and offers an experience that goes far beyond the classic image of a beach. The shallow, warm waters of the lagoon are ideal for relaxed walks in the sea, while the wider landscape, with Gramvousa and rugged cliffs in the background, creates a powerful feeling of freedom and awe.

Access & Experience

  • Access by boat from the port of Kissamos
  • Alternatively, by road, driving to the parking area followed by a short hiking path
  • Beautiful panoramic views from above before reaching the beach
  • Ideal for a day trip and photography

The Balos experience begins before you even reach the water: the path down to the lagoon offers one of the most impressive panoramic views in Crete and is a favourite spot for photos.

Ideal For

  • Day trips by boat or car
  • Nature lovers and fans of exotic landscapes
  • Photography, exploration and relaxed swimming
  • Visitors who want to experience one of the most iconic images of Crete

Useful Tips

Wear comfortable shoes for the short walk from the parking area to the beach and bring water and a hat, as the sun can be particularly strong.

To enjoy Balos with fewer people, choose the early morning hours or visit outside the high season.
